Job Description

Tour II: (8:00AM-4:00PM)


Under the general supervision of the Director of the Behavior Support Team (BST).


  • Works with unit-based team (MD, psychologist, nursing, etc.) to assist in developing and implementing Individual Behavior Plans (IBPs).
  • Conduct functional assessments and create behavioral programming based on function of problem behavior.
  • Provides education and instruction on data collection and implementation techniques of the IBPs to the unit-based staff members.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of the IBPs using data collected.
  • Functions as a critical member of the day-to-day milieu and assists in the moment when individuals are experiencing a behavioral crisis. Will assist staff as needed in following through in behavioral interventions as written and provide support using patient-centered, trauma-informed care.
  • Will provide ongoing training to staff working on the unit about behavioral management and other strategies to ensure all staff are trained on how to work with dually diagnosed individuals and handle daily difficult situations that may occur.
  • Lead individual and small group social skills groups.
  • Conduct training with: parents/guardians, community stakeholders, and staff in various inpatient and outpatient contexts.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
  • Developing and writing individualized behavior plans
  • Developing discrete trial training programs in collaboration with other disciplines (e.g., nursing, psychiatrist, psychologist)
  • Creating and sustaining programs that are person-centered and trauma-informed
  • Staff training/supervision regarding implementation of behavioral interventions
  • Social skills training and teaching adaptive replacement behaviors
  • Supporting individuals who engage in aggressive behavior towards themselves, others, or property and have skills to respond calmly when crisis situations arise.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines and be able to participate in integrated treatment planning process

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level I
1. A valid License or Limited Permit issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as a Mental Health Counselor.
Assignment Level II
1. A valid License issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as a Mental Health Counselor; and
2. Two years of full-time, paid, professional experience providing direct client care in a behavior health setting.
Assignment Level III
In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Levels II, Assignment Level III requires:
1. Three additional years of post-licensure experience.
Special Note:
The administration of assessment and screening instruments does not include the administration or interpretation of Intelligence (IQ) tests, Projective tests, or Neuropsychological tests or instruments.

Department Preferences

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification preferred (but could be working toward certification) New York State License in Behavior Analysis preferred.
  • BA/BS degree in Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, or clinical behavior analysis. Master’s degree in Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis or related field preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in data collection. Must be knowledgeable in use of Excel for graphing
  • At least one year of conducting functional behavior assessments (FBA) and collecting data about adults/children/adolescents exhibiting problematic and dangerous behaviors (e.g., physical/verbal aggression, suicidal behavior, treatment noncompliance, sexual acting out behaviors).
  • Developing and writing individualized behavior plans
