The New York City Department of Sanitation is seeking an experienced professional to join our Employee Assistance Unit (EAU), the agency’s in-house Employee Assistance Program. The EAU supports DSNY’s workforce of approximately 10,000 employees and is part of the Department’s Medical Division.

The Senior Counselor will provide counseling services to employees and their family members. Counseling includes intake assessment, referrals when appropriate, case monitoring, and short-term treatment. The counselor will be part of a team of clinicians. The Senior Counselor’s role includes both clinical and training responsibilities.

Key knowledge areas include substance use disorder management, trauma, couples counseling, and mental illness.

The successful candidate will have the ability to facilitate case presentations, train staff on clinical issues, and supervise social work students.

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, plus two (2) years of experience in social work, employment counseling, group work, rehabilitation, counseling or related activities; or

2. A master’s degree or 30 credits of graduate study in sociology, psychology, vocational guidance, counseling, group work, rehabilitation or related fields, and one (1) year of experience as described above; or

3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree or be certified as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC).

Requirements for Assignment Level II
For Assignment Level II, in addition to meeting the qualification requirements above, one (1) additional year of the experience described in “1” above is required.

Requirements for Assignment Level III
For Assignment Level III, in addition to meeting the qualification required above, two (2) additional years of the experience described in “1” above is required.

• A Licensed Master’s degree in Social Work or a related field
• from an accredited college
• A minimum of four years of full-time experience in providing individual counseling
• SIFI Certified (Seminar Training in Field Instruction)
• SAP Credential
• Assessment and Crisis Intervention
• Experience faciliating clincal groups
• Supervisory experience
• Experience with Trama and PTSD
• Experience with Family/Couples Counseling
• Experience with substance use disorder diagnosis or treatment
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
• Written and oral communication skills
