PGT Eligibility — Complete Details (Age, Qualification, STET)
Age Limit (as on 01 July 2026)
| Category | Minimum | Maximum | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|---|
| General (UR) | 21 years | 37 years | — |
| SC / ST | 21 | 42 | +5 years |
| EBC / BC | 21 | 40 | +3 years |
| Female (UR) | 21 | 40 | +3 years |
| PwD | 21 | 47 | +10 years |
Important change: TRE 4.0 sets the minimum age for Class 9–12 (TGT/PGT) at 21 years — candidates aged 18–20 cannot apply for PGT at all. This is a change from previous TRE phases. Maximum age varies by category as above (verify with the final notification).
Qualification (Subject-Wise)
- Post Graduate (PG) — in the subject you are applying for, with minimum 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) from a recognized university
- B.Ed — in the same subject (B.Ed subject ≠ PGT subject = possible rejection)
- STET/BTET Paper-2 — either Class 9-10 level or 11-12 level, passed in the same subject
- CTET also accepted — CBSE’s CTET Paper-2 (relevant subject) works equally
- Language subjects (Hindi/Urdu/Bengali/Sanskrit) may have additional requirements — check the relevant subject’s PDF in the notification
PGT Exam Pattern — Single Phase (New TRE 4.0 System)
After the 27 August 2026 announcement, TRE 4.0 will be a single-phase exam (previously there were two phases). Expected pattern (to be confirmed with the notification):
| Section | Expected Content | Weightage |
|---|---|---|
| Subject (PG level) | Core PG syllabus — concepts and applications | Highest (~60-70%) |
| Teaching Methodology | B.Ed pedagogy — lesson planning, evaluation | ~20% |
| General Awareness / Bihar-specific | Current affairs, state GK | ~10-15% |
Preparation tip: Spend 70% of your time on PG core concepts — TRE’s subject paper is PG-level, not graduation-level. Revise your PG semester content alongside NCERT-style syllabi.
How Merit Is Calculated — PGT Selection Maths
- Written marks — the base of the subject-wise merit
- Category roster applies — SC 5,271, UR 3,852, BC 3,222, EBC 1,704… (see the roster table above)
- Separate lists per subject — Chemistry’s merit is separate from Physics’s — only your subject’s competition matters
- Tie-breaking: On equal marks — higher PG percentage first, then age seniority
Selection Process — Step by Step
- Online application (through OTR): From 21 Sept — choose subject + category
- Single-phase written exam: Subject-based paper (PG level) as per the 27 August announcement
- Merit list (subject-wise): Separate merit per subject as per the category roster
- Document Verification: PG marksheet + B.Ed + STET/BTET + category certificate + DigiLocker
- Joining: School allotment (by subject + district)
Documents — Prepare Before Applying
- PG marksheet (the subject you are applying for, from the 22-subject list)
- B.Ed certificate (in the same subject)
- STET/BTET Paper-2 certificate — subject match is mandatory
- Category certificate — BPSC format, valid (check the EWS fiscal year)
- DigiLocker account — mandatory for certificate verification
- Photo + signature — digital copies ready
TRE 4.0 — Vacancy in Other Levels (Beyond PGT)
| Level | Class | Salary | Posts |

| Primary Teacher | 1–5 | Rs 25,000 | 3,847 |
| Middle School | 6–8 | Rs 28,000 | 8,563 |

| Higher Secondary (PGT) | 11–12 | Rs 32,000 | 16,101 |
| Total | 32,388 | ||
PGT vs TGT vs Middle School — What’s Different
| Point | Middle (6–8) | TGT (9–10) | PGT (11–12) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualification | D.El.Ed/BTC + Paper-2 | Graduation + B.Ed + STET-2 | PG + B.Ed + STET-2 |
| Vacancy (TRE 4.0) | 8,563 | 3,877 | 16,101 |
| Basic pay | Rs 28,000 | Rs 31,000 | Rs 32,000 |
| Minimum age | 21 | 21 | 21 |
| Promotion path | → TGT → PGT | → PGT | → Principal |
Eligible for both levels? If you have PG + B.Ed + STET-2, apply for PGT — 4x the vacancies (16,101 vs 3,877) means much higher selection chances. (Note: TRE allows only one level per form.)
PGT Salary — In-Hand Breakdown
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Basic Pay | Rs 32,000 |
| Gross monthly (with DA, HRA etc.) | Rs 65,000–75,000 (varies by city class) |
| Annual package (approx.) | Rs 8–10 Lakh+ |
| Benefits | Pension (NPS), medical, leave, career advancement up to Principal |
5 Things to Consider Before Choosing Your Subject
- Vacancy vs competition ratio: Chemistry has 3,695 posts — but every science candidate applies there. Botany (1,078) or Psychology (1,030) may have a better ratio
- STET subject MATCH: You can only choose the subject you passed STET/BTET in — STET Hindi + PGT Chemistry form = REJECTION. This is the most common mistake
- PG marks: You need 50%+ in the subject (45% for reserved) — apply even if borderline (it matters at final verification)
- Only one subject: TRE allows one subject for PGT — no multi-subject forms. Choose your best-chance subject
- Future lock-in: The subject you choose decides your school posting — do not chase vacancies alone, choose your strong subject
Previous TRE Cycles — PGT Trend Data
| Cycle | Total Posts | PGT Share | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRE 1.0 (2023) | ~1.7 lakh | Largest ever | Special recruitment |
| TRE 2.0 (2024) | ~40,000+ | Big block | — |
| TRE 3.0 (2025) | ~87,000 | PGT-majority | — |
| TRE 4.0 (2026) | 32,388 | 16,101 (49.7%) | Fee just Rs 100 — cheapest |
Trend observation: PGT’s share has grown every cycle — and this time the fee is also just Rs 100 (previously Rs 500-1000+). Expect more applications than ever — competition will be tougher, but 16,101 posts are still a huge opportunity. Strategy: choose your subject wisely and start single-phase exam preparation early.
