Guess or Skip? The Expected-Value Maths
With four options per question and a penalty of &minus. 1 for a wrong answer. a purely random guess has an expected value of (1/4 ×. 4) − (3/4 × 1) = +0.25 marks per question . In simple terms, blind guessing is marginally positive rather than negative.
- The maths assumes a genuinely random guess with no knowledge and no elimination.
- Most candidates’ guesses are not random &mdash. attraction towards plausible distractors can make the effective value negative.
- If you can eliminate even one option. the expected value improves sharply.
- Blank answers score zero. so there is no penalty for leaving a question unattempted &mdash. only an opportunity cost.
