The SSC CGL salary per month in hand is around Rs 41,000 to Rs 48,000 for Level 4 posts and around Rs 74,000 to Rs 87,000 for Level 8 posts. These are estimates. The Staff Selection Commission publishes only the pay scale, never an in-hand figure. Starting basic pay in SSC CGL 2026 ranges from Rs 25,500 (Pay Level 4) to Rs 47,600 (Pay Level 8), and the final in-hand amount depends on the pay level, the city of posting and the current allowance rates — Dearness Allowance is 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026. This guide works out the maths step by step, using the SSC CGL 2026 Notice of Examination dated 21 May 2026, so you can check every number yourself. Candidates who appeared in Tier-I can also check our SSC CGL Answer Key 2026 guide.

SSC CGL is a central government recruitment, so the salary follows central government pay rules. The same pay level pays the same basic pay in every department — what changes with the posting is mainly the House Rent Allowance and the Transport Allowance, because both depend on the city.
Post-Wise Pay Scale of SSC CGL 2026
Every post in the CGL 2026 notice sits in one of five pay levels. The pay level, more than the post name, decides the SSC CGL salary per month in hand, because basic pay, DA, HRA and the NPS deduction all flow from it.
| Post | Department / Ministry | Pay Level | Pay Scale (Rs) | Starting Basic Pay (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant Audit Officer | Indian Audit and Accounts Department under the Comptroller and Auditor General (Central Cadre and State Cadre) | Level 8 | 47,600 – 1,51,100 | 47,600 |
| Assistant Accounts Officer | Indian Audit and Accounts Department under the Comptroller and Auditor General (State Cadre) | Level 8 | 47,600 – 1,51,100 | 47,600 |
| Assistant Section Officer | Central Secretariat Service, Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of External Affairs, Railways, AFHQ, MeitY and other ministries | Level 7 | 44,900 – 1,42,400 | 44,900 |

| Statistical Investigator Grade II | Office of Registrar General of India | Level 6 | 35,400 – 1,12,400 | 35,400 |
| Sub-Inspector | National Investigation Agency | Level 6 | 35,400 – 1,12,400 | 35,400 |

| Accountant | Offices under the Comptroller and Auditor General | Level 5 | 29,200 – 92,300 | 29,200 |
| Junior Accountant | Offices under the Comptroller and Auditor General | Level 5 | 29,200 – 92,300 | 29,200 |
| Tax Assistant | Central Board of Direct Taxes and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs | Level 4 | 25,500 – 81,100 | 25,500 |
| Senior Secretariat Assistant / Upper Division Clerk | Central Government offices | Level 4 | 25,500 – 81,100 | 25,500 |
| Upper Division Clerk | Border Roads Organisation | Level 4 | 25,500 – 81,100 | 25,500 |
A correction worth noting. Several salary pages on the internet show Assistant Section Officer (ASO) at Pay Level 6. The CGL 2026 notice places ASO at Pay Level 7, with a starting basic pay of Rs 44,900. If a page shows ASO at Level 6, its in-hand figures for that post will be wrong too.
SSC CGL Allowances Breakdown
Basic pay is only part of the salary. Three allowances make up most of the rest of the SSC CGL salary per month in hand, and all three are fixed by central government orders, not by SSC.
Dearness Allowance (DA) – 60% of basic pay. DA is 60% of basic pay with effect from 1 January 2026, under the Department of Expenditure order dated 22 April 2026. Some websites still show the older 58% rate — that figure is outdated, and using it understates the salary by a few thousand rupees a month.
House Rent Allowance (HRA) – 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay. HRA depends on the city of posting: 30% in X class cities (Delhi, Mumbai and other metros), 20% in Y class cities and 10% in Z class cities. These are the revised slabs that apply after DA crossed 50%. HRA is paid only if the employee does not live in government accommodation.
Transport Allowance (TA) – Rs 3,600 or Rs 1,800, plus DA on TA. Transport Allowance is Rs 3,600 per month in higher-TPTA cities and Rs 1,800 per month elsewhere. DA is also paid on the Transport Allowance, so the TA component is Rs 3,600 plus Rs 2,160 (60% of 3,600) in a higher-TPTA city, and Rs 1,800 plus Rs 1,080 elsewhere.
Other allowances. Some posts carry extra allowances — for example, special allowances in enforcement and investigation departments. The notice does not fix a single amount for these, so this guide does not quote any figure for them. Any in-hand number you see online that quietly adds an unspecified allowance is guessing.
In-Hand Salary Calculation
The SSC CGL salary per month in hand is not published by SSC, so the honest way to arrive at it is to work it out: basic pay plus DA plus HRA plus Transport Allowance, minus NPS and income tax. Here is the full worked example for a Pay Level 7 post, such as Assistant Section Officer, in an X class city (Delhi) and in a Z class city.
| Component | X City (Delhi) | Z City |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pay (Level 7) | Rs 44,900 | Rs 44,900 |
| Dearness Allowance (60% of basic) | Rs 26,940 | Rs 26,940 |
| House Rent Allowance (30% / 10%) | Rs 13,470 | Rs 4,490 |
| Transport Allowance | Rs 3,600 | Rs 1,800 |
| DA on Transport Allowance (60%) | Rs 2,160 | Rs 1,080 |
| Gross salary | Rs 91,070 | Rs 79,210 |
| Less: NPS deduction (10% of basic + DA) | Rs 7,184 | Rs 7,184 |
| Pay before income tax | Rs 83,886 | Rs 72,026 |
| In-hand salary (estimate, after approximate income tax) | Rs 80,000 – 82,000 | Rs 70,000 – 72,000 |
The same maths, applied to every pay level, gives the level-wise estimates below. Gross pay is worked out from the rates above for an X class city; in-hand figures are estimates, because income tax depends on the individual.
| Pay Level | Starting Basic Pay | Gross Pay (X City, Worked Out) | SSC CGL Salary Per Month In Hand (Estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 8 | Rs 47,600 | Rs 96,200 | Rs 74,000 – 87,000 |
| Level 7 | Rs 44,900 | Rs 91,070 | Rs 70,000 – 82,000 |
| Level 6 | Rs 35,400 | Rs 73,020 | Rs 56,000 – 66,000 |
| Level 5 | Rs 29,200 | Rs 61,240 | Rs 46,000 – 55,000 |
| Level 4 | Rs 25,500 | Rs 54,210 | Rs 41,000 – 48,000 |
Read this before trusting any in-hand figure online. SSC publishes the pay scale only; no in-hand figure is published officially. The ranges above are estimates worked out from the verified DA, HRA and TA rates, minus NPS and approximate income tax. The lower end of each range is roughly a Z class city posting and the higher end an X class city posting. If a website quotes a single exact in-hand number for a CGL post without showing its maths, treat it as a guess.
Deductions from SSC CGL Salary
Gross pay is not take-home pay. Three deductions come off the SSC CGL salary per month in hand before it reaches the bank account.
National Pension System (NPS) – 10% of basic pay plus DA. This is the largest fixed deduction. For a Level 7 officer it is 10% of Rs 44,900 plus Rs 26,940, which is Rs 7,184 a month. The government adds its own 14% share on top, but that share does not appear in the monthly pay slip.
Income tax – approximate. Tax depends on the tax regime chosen and total income, so no single figure applies to every officer. At these pay levels the monthly tax works out to roughly a few thousand rupees — this is an approximation, and the wide in-hand ranges above exist mainly because tax varies from person to person.
CGHS contribution. Central Government Health Scheme members pay a monthly contribution, the amount of which varies by pay level. The CGL notice does not fix this amount, so no figure is quoted here.
Career Growth and Promotion in SSC CGL
The highest starting post in SSC CGL is Assistant Audit Officer at Pay Level 8. All CGL posts carry an annual increment of 3% of basic pay under the 7th Central Pay Commission rules, so the SSC CGL salary per month in hand rises every year even without a promotion. Promotions move officers to higher pay levels over the course of a career, through departmental promotion channels and the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme. Post-specific promotion timelines differ by department and are not fixed in the CGL notice, so this guide does not quote any. For a comparison with a constable-level central government salary, read our SSC GD Salary 2027 guide, and for a state government pay scale, our MP Secondary Teacher Salary 2026 guide.
8th Pay Commission Status
The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 and is in the consultation phase. As of November 2026, no official pay matrix and no fitment factor has been notified. That means there is no official 8th Pay Commission figure for the SSC CGL salary per month in hand yet, and any figure circulating on social media or coaching websites is speculation. This guide will be updated when the commission’s recommendations are officially notified.
