The ssc chsl salary per month is an estimated Rs 37,114 in hand for a Lower Division Clerk (LDC) in an X class city, and an estimated Rs 50,676 in hand for a Data Entry Operator (DEO) at Pay Level 4 in the same city. These are estimates worked out step by step below, using Dearness Allowance of 63% — the central rate from 1 July 2026. The Staff Selection Commission publishes only the pay levels in the CHSL 2026 notice, never an in-hand figure, so every in-hand number in this guide is labelled as an estimate and the maths is shown in full. For a graduate-level comparison, read our SSC CGL Salary Per Month In Hand guide.

CHSL is the biggest central government recruitment for Class 12 pass candidates. The same pay level pays the same basic pay in every department — what changes with the posting is mainly the House Rent Allowance and the Transport Allowance, because both depend on the city.
Post-Wise Pay Scale of SSC CHSL 2026
Every post in the CHSL 2026 notice sits in one of three pay levels under the 7th Central Pay Commission. The pay level, more than the post name, decides the SSC CHSL salary per month, because basic pay, DA, HRA and the NPS deduction all flow from it.
| Post | Pay Level | Pay Scale (Rs) | Starting Basic Pay (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) | Level 2 | 19,900 – 63,200 | 19,900 |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) | Level 4 | 25,500 – 81,100 | 25,500 |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) | Level 5 | 29,200 – 92,300 | 29,200 |
| Data Entry Operator, Grade ‘A’ | Level 4 | 25,500 – 81,100 | 25,500 |
A distinction worth noting. DEO Grade ‘A’ sits at Pay Level 4, while some DEO posts sit at Pay Level 5. Many salary pages merge the two or quote only one DEO figure. This guide works out Level 4 and Level 5 separately, because the starting basic differs by Rs 3,700 a month and the in-hand difference in an X class city is about Rs 6,500.
SSC CHSL Allowances Breakdown
Basic pay is only part of the salary. Three allowances make up most of the rest of the SSC CHSL salary per month, and all three are fixed by central government orders, not by SSC.
Dearness Allowance (DA) – 63% of basic pay. DA is 63% of basic pay, the central government rate from 1 July 2026. For an LDC that is Rs 12,537 a month, and for a DEO at Level 4 it is Rs 16,065 a month. DA is revised twice a year, so this rate will change — any in-hand figure that does not state its DA rate cannot be checked.
House Rent Allowance (HRA) – 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay. HRA depends on the city of posting: 30% in X class cities (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Greater Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune), 20% in Y class cities and 10% in Z class cities. These are the revised slabs that apply after DA crossed 50%. HRA is not paid if the employee lives in government accommodation.
Transport Allowance (TA) – plus DA on TA. Transport Allowance depends on the pay level and the city. For an LDC (Level 2) it is Rs 1,350 a month in higher-TPTA cities and Rs 900 elsewhere, and DA is paid on it — so the TA component is Rs 2,201 in an X class city and Rs 1,467 elsewhere. For a DEO (Levels 4 and 5) it is Rs 3,600 in higher-TPTA cities and Rs 1,800 elsewhere, so the TA component is Rs 5,868 in an X class city and Rs 2,934 elsewhere. Some Y cities, such as Jaipur, Lucknow and Patna, get the higher rate.
Other allowances. Some posts carry extra allowances — for example, special allowances in particular departments. The notice does not fix a single amount for these, so this guide does not quote any figure for them. Any in-hand number you see online that quietly adds an unspecified allowance is guessing.
LDC Salary Per Month – Worked X/Y/Z Calculation
Here is the full worked calculation for an LDC/JSA at Pay Level 2, starting basic pay Rs 19,900, with DA at 63%. Gross pay is basic plus DA plus HRA plus Transport Allowance with DA; the deductions are NPS and, in X class cities, the CGHS contribution.
| Component | X City | Y City | Z City |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic pay (Level 2) | Rs 19,900 | Rs 19,900 | Rs 19,900 |
| Dearness Allowance (63% of basic) | Rs 12,537 | Rs 12,537 | Rs 12,537 |
| House Rent Allowance (30% / 20% / 10%) | Rs 5,970 | Rs 3,980 | Rs 1,990 |
| Transport Allowance + DA on TA | Rs 2,201 | Rs 1,467 | Rs 1,467 |
| Gross salary | Rs 40,608 | Rs 37,884 | Rs 35,894 |
| Less: NPS (10% of basic + DA) | Rs 3,244 | Rs 3,244 | Rs 3,244 |
| Less: CGHS (Rs 250, CGHS cities only) | Rs 250 | — | — |
| Estimated in-hand (before income tax) | Rs 37,114 | Rs 34,640 | Rs 32,650 |
So the SSC CHSL salary per month for an LDC is an estimated Rs 37,114 in a metro city, Rs 34,640 in a Y class city and Rs 32,650 in a Z class city — before income tax. The gap between the metro and the small-town figure is about Rs 4,464, and almost all of it is the HRA difference.
DEO Salary Per Month – Worked X/Y/Z Calculation
The same method for a DEO at Pay Level 4, starting basic pay Rs 25,500, with DA at 63%.
| Component | X City | Y City | Z City |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic pay (Level 4) | Rs 25,500 | Rs 25,500 | Rs 25,500 |
| Dearness Allowance (63% of basic) | Rs 16,065 | Rs 16,065 | Rs 16,065 |
| House Rent Allowance (30% / 20% / 10%) | Rs 7,650 | Rs 5,100 | Rs 2,550 |
| Transport Allowance + DA on TA | Rs 5,868 | Rs 2,934 | Rs 2,934 |
| Gross salary | Rs 55,083 | Rs 49,599 | Rs 47,049 |
| Less: NPS (10% of basic + DA) | Rs 4,157 | Rs 4,157 | Rs 4,157 |
| Less: CGHS (Rs 250, CGHS cities only) | Rs 250 | — | — |
| Estimated in-hand (before income tax) | Rs 50,676 | Rs 45,442 | Rs 42,892 |
DEO at Pay Level 5 (including DEO posts at Level 5). With a starting basic of Rs 29,200, the same rates give a gross salary of Rs 62,224 in an X class city, Rs 56,370 in a Y class city and Rs 53,450 in a Z class city. After the NPS deduction of Rs 4,760 and the CGHS contribution of Rs 250 in an X class city, the estimated in-hand salary is Rs 57,214 (X city), Rs 51,610 (Y city) and Rs 48,690 (Z city), before income tax. DEO Grade ‘A’ itself sits at Level 4, so its figures are the Level 4 ones above — Rs 50,676 in an X class city.
SSC CHSL Salary Per Month – Summary Table
| Post | Pay Level | Starting Basic | Gross (X City) | Estimated In-Hand (X / Y / Z) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LDC / JSA | Level 2 | Rs 19,900 | Rs 40,608 | Rs 37,114 / 34,640 / 32,650 |
| DEO | Level 4 | Rs 25,500 | Rs 55,083 | Rs 50,676 / 45,442 / 42,892 |
| DEO | Level 5 | Rs 29,200 | Rs 62,224 | Rs 57,214 / 51,610 / 48,690 |
| DEO Grade ‘A’ | Level 4 | Rs 25,500 | Rs 55,083 | Rs 50,676 / 45,442 / 42,892 |
Read this before trusting any in-hand figure online. SSC publishes the pay levels only; no in-hand figure is published officially. The figures above are estimates worked out from the verified DA, HRA and TA rates, minus NPS and CGHS, before income tax. If a website quotes a single exact in-hand number for a CHSL post without showing its maths or its DA rate, treat it as a guess — one page quotes an LDC at “Rs 30,000–33,000” and another at “about Rs 39,600”, and neither shows how it got there.
Deductions from SSC CHSL Salary
Gross pay is not take-home pay. Three deductions come off the SSC CHSL salary per month before it reaches the bank account.
National Pension System (NPS) – 10% of basic pay plus DA. This is the largest fixed deduction. For an LDC it is 10% of Rs 19,900 plus Rs 12,537, which is Rs 3,244 a month. For a DEO at Level 4 it is Rs 4,157 a month, and at Level 5 it is Rs 4,760 a month. The government adds its own 14% share on top, but that share does not appear in the monthly pay slip.
CGHS contribution – Rs 250 a month. Central Government Health Scheme members at Pay Levels 1–5 pay a monthly contribution of Rs 250, deducted only in CGHS cities. All X class cities have CGHS, and many Y cities do, so the worked tables above deduct it only in the X city column.
Income tax – approximate. Tax depends on the tax regime chosen and total income, so no single figure applies to every employee. At LDC and DEO pay levels the monthly tax works out to roughly a few hundred to a few thousand rupees — this is an approximation, and the in-hand figures above are stated before income tax for exactly this reason.
Career Growth and Promotion in SSC CHSL
All CHSL posts carry an annual increment of 3% of basic pay under the 7th Central Pay Commission rules, so the SSC CHSL salary per month rises every year even without a promotion. An LDC/JSA moves up to Upper Division Clerk (UDC) and further senior grades through departmental promotion channels, and a DEO moves to senior DEO grades, with the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme applying across central government posts. Post-specific promotion timelines differ by department and are not fixed in the CHSL notice, so this guide does not quote any. For a comparison with a constable-level central government salary, read our SSC GD Salary 2027 guide.
8th Pay Commission Status
The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 and is in the consultation phase. As of November 2026, no official pay matrix and no fitment factor has been notified. That means there is no official 8th Pay Commission figure for the SSC CHSL salary per month yet, and any figure circulating on social media or coaching websites is speculation. This guide will be updated when the commission’s recommendations are officially notified.
SSC CHSL 2026 – Exam Status
The CHSL 2026 notice was published on 7 September 2026 for about 2,536 tentative vacancies — the final vacancy position, including the post-wise and category-wise break-up, will be determined later by the user departments. Applications closed on 7 October 2026, the fee window closed on 8 October 2026 and the correction window ended on 16 October 2026. Tier-I is proposed for 30 November to 31 December 2026; the exact dates will appear on the admit card, and candidates should check ssc.gov.in rather than trusting any single date quoted elsewhere.
